You may have heard that the Chechen government is rounding up and torturing gay/bi men. The New York Times reports at least 100 arrests and three deaths. Yesterday I began encouraging my friends on Facebook and Twitter to donate to the Russian LGBT Network, which is helping evacuate vulnerable LGBT people from Chechnya. I also decided to direct proceeds from my anthology Falling Hard: Stories of Men in Love to the Russian LGBT Network through April 20, and I’ve been encouraging other authors to do something similar. An April 14 press release from the Russian LGBT Network explains that it continues its effort to evacuate Chechens who are being persecuted, tortured, illegally prosecuted, and murdered based on their (assumed) homosexuality. Since March 29th, it has received around 50 calls from people who are still in the Norther Caucasus and in need of urgent evacuation, as well as from people, who managed to relocate themselves, yet still need assistance.
